One council member position for each of the four wards and mayor for a 4-year term.

Council Candidate Filing Requirements

City Council candidates must be a registered electors of the City of Niles in the ward that they are seeking. Mayor is elected at-large representing the entire city.   

Nominating Candidates:
A primary election for an office shall be conducted only if there are more than two candidates for nomination. The two candidates receiving the greatest number of votes in the primary election shall be declared nominated for that office and their names shall be placed on the general election ballot. The candidate receiving the greatest number of votes in the general election shall be declared elected.

Elected Candidates:
Niles City Council Elections are held in November in even-numbered years and takes office after the election has been certified by the Berrien County Board of Canvassers at the following city council meeting.  

 
Election Dates:
Primary Election will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2022. The General Election will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

Filing Deadline: 
Nominating petitions, Affidavit of Identity and  Statement of Organization documents must be filed with the Niles City Clerk by 4:00pm, April 19, 2022.

Nominating Petitions:
Candidates who wish to seek office at the November election must file an Affidavit of Identity, Statement of Organization, and Nominating Petitions. The required signatures must be collected on non- partisan nominating petition forms. These petitions for City Council must bear the appropriate designation to indicate the office sought by the candidate.

Signature Requirement:
The minimum number of valid signatures required on nominating petitions for City Council is 50 registered electors from the ward you are seeking to be elected. The maximum number of signatures which can be submitted to meet the signature requirement is 75. Circulating Nominating Petitions

Filing Location:

Withdrawal:

A candidate must submit a written withdrawal notice to the City Clerk not later than 4p.m. of the third day after the last day for filing petitions. The withdrawal deadline for 2022 is Friday, April 22, 2022.

Candidates seeking public office in Michigan are required to meet the disclosure requirements provided under Michigan's Campaign Finance Act.
